Thermal Breakage of Window Glass

Intro: This happens when there is an uneven distribution of heat across the surface of a glass. Therefore, if the uneven distribution of heat is greater than the glass strength that’s when thermal breakage takes place causing the glass to crack.

Causes: Absorption of heat from the sun is the most common cause of thermal breakage, the sun heats certain parts of the pane whilst the other edges of the glass stays cool due to the window frames or shades. So when that takes place the heated parts expand and the cooler parts doesn’t and when the cooler part can’t retain the heat anymore, it results to thermal breakage.

Prevention: It can be prevented by framing the window glass with a low capacity heat frame. Glass type also plays a role in preventing thermal breakage, glasses like tinted glass which can absorb more heat. Solar control glasses also can prevent thermal breakage because they can absorb more heat than the plain glass.

Benefit of Argon Gas Filled Units

The way the double glazing reduces energy lost in a home is down to the gap between the two panes of glass and with that being said, then Argon gas is one option you should consider. It helps more heat in during the winter and out in the summer, as a result living and working conditions becomes more comfortable the whole year around. This phenomenon results from the fact that the density of the gas is greater than the density of the air.

Argon gas can also be called Insulated glazing, they are manufactured with glass in range of thickness from 3mm to 10mm or more. They are mainly found in a double pane glass separated by air or gas to minimize the transfer of heat across a particular area of a building.

In an Argon gas filled double glazed window, the air is replaced with argon gas. The benefit is that, with the argon gas 34% less thermally conductive than air, can retain more heat within a property. Argon is a perfect gas use in a double glazed window because its non-toxic, colourless, non-flammable, non-reactive, odourless and chemically inert.

Furthermore, the raised internal temperature of the argon filled window further minimizes the risk of condensation settling on the internal surfaces of the glass.
